Video games are always evolving. However, some of the games are trying to shape future trends. The developers try to use mechanics that were never there before. They use the latest technology and creative ideas to make games memorable. A key part of this is how the player’s actions affect the game world.

10 video games with unique game mechanics, the craziest mechanics in gaming history

We'll talk about previous games and brilliant ideas used to make unique mechanics that influenced the game industry somehow. Any unique game mechanic begins with an idea embodied in concept art, and we will help you bring this idea to life from scratch with our concept art services.

A-Life

This A-Life system is designed to change the gameplay experience in the Zone radically. The A-Life system in the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a complex but fascinating feature that makes the game world feel more alive and unpredictable. Unlike typical games where things only happen when the player is around, in S.T.A.L.K.E.R., the world keeps going even when the player isn’t there.

Here’s how it works:

  1. NPCs (non-player characters) in the game have their routines. Whether the player is nearby or not, these characters move around, interact, and live out their lives. They use items, and can even get injured or die during their activities.
  2. When NPCs are close to the player, within about 150 meters, they are in an “online” state. This means they behave like you’d expect — walking around, using items, and reacting to the player’s actions. But when they move beyond this range, they don’t just disappear. Instead, they enter an “offline” mode. In this mode, they’re not actively engaging in detailed activities but are still part of the world. They don’t vanish completely but aren’t as detailed in their actions.
  3. The game world reacts to events dynamically. For example, if a fight happens in one part of the game world, the player can later visit that location and see the aftermath, like bodies or other evidence of what happened, regardless of whether the player was there for the fight or not.

Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor Nemesis System

The Nemesis system in the game Shadow of Mordor is a unique mechanic that randomly generates enemies in Sauron’s army, creating unique opponents in each playthrough. Each enemy, known as a “Nemesis”, has its own character and social status, which changes as the game progresses. Nemeses reacts to the actions of the main character, Talion. They can fight, flee, or act differently.

According to the Reddit discussion, enemies are characterized by several factors:

Each Nemesis is uniquely identified by its name. These Nemeses come to life through random generations, with diverse body types, parts, and hairstyles. Even their behaviors, voices, and animations hint at their personalities.

The strength of each Nemesis is measured by a power level, with the maximum threshold set at 20. As they spend time in the system, their experiences translate into ranks. A newcomer without any missions holds no prefix to their name. Those who have completed several missions earn the title of Veteran. More seasoned Nemeses, having done a significant number of missions, are known as Elite. The most distinguished among them are the Legendary Nemesis.

Relationship dynamics play a crucial role too, as some uruks form alliances or rivalries with other Nemeses, weaving a complex web of interactions. Each Nemesis also shows a distinctive fighting style, inspired by different types of uruks, which equips them with new abilities and enhancements for battle.

These formidable adversaries can be found across various locations, and should Talion engage in battle in their region. They might just join the fray, adding another layer of strategy to the encounter.

Nemeses can advance in rank, becoming captains and war chiefs, and can grow considerably stronger as they complete missions. The player must gather information about the strengths and weaknesses of enemies.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem Sanity System and Its Influence on Future Games

Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem introduced a sanity system that significantly impacted the gameplay experience. The sanity effects first become apparent when playing as Ellia, as Pious Augustus doesn’t lose sanity in his chapter.

As the player character is seen by monsters, their Sanity Meter depletes. Sanity Effects usually trigger when entering a room and can sometimes be initiated by interacting with the environment, such as picking up items. The lower the Sanity Meter when entering a room, the more likely a Sanity Effect will occur, and the more severe it will be.

When a seemingly harmful Sanity Effect ends, the screen flashes bright white, and everything returns to normal. The player is then teleported to the location where the sanity effect began, typically the last door they walked through. During these moments, the character may exclaim, “This can’t be happening!”, “This isn’t really happening!”, or similar phrases. If the Sanity Meter is empty, the player’s health starts depleting instead.

Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem inspired several future games to incorporate similar mechanics:

  • 1

    Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Sanity is represented through the “Sanity Meter”. Staying in darkness, witnessing disturbing events, or staring at enemies drains sanity. As sanity decreases, the environment becomes more disturbing and dangerous. The game features four levels of sanity, each progressively more severe. When sanity drops to zero in Hard Mode, it results in the character's death.

  • 2

    Pascal's Wager

The sanity meter grows during battles with bosses, and if left unchecked, it makes the bosses significantly stronger, altering their appearance and attacks.

  • 3

    Amnesia: Rebirth

The sanity mechanic returns, renamed “Fear”. Standing in darkness, witnessing disturbing events, and viewing mutilated corpses drain the protagonist's sanity, leading to significant gameplay changes if it accumulates too much.

  • 4

    Amnesia: The Bunker

Sanity mechanics are largely absent, reflecting the protagonist's desensitization to the horrors of World War I. However, extended exposure to the game's primary monster, the Beast, can temporarily blur the protagonist's vision.

This legacy continues to shape the design of modern horror games, making players question their characters and their perception of reality.

Technology for Switching Between New and Classic Graphics

343 Industries decided that one Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary engine wouldn’t suffice, so they used two. Players can switch graphics between “classic” and “new” modes in real time. Dan Ayoub, the general producer of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, explained that transitioning to the “classic mode” is achieved by pressing a single button on the gamepad. Industries took the original engine and slightly updated it to current standards. The second engine was created with the involvement of Saber Interactive employees. Developers managed to combine two technologies from entirely different generations into one whole.

The Command & Conquer Remaster includes the original C&C and C&C: Red Alert and their expansion packs. The remaster has been developed in the classic 2D visual style to maintain authenticity. According to producer Jim Vessella, recovering the source code allowed them to match the legacy titles’ core gameplay, feel, and signature look. The developers have re-concepted, re-modeled, and re-animated every gameplay asset from scratch. During a campaign mission, players can tap a single key to switch between the original assets at 320 x 200 resolution and the remastered assets up to 3840 x 2160 resolution.

Insight in Bloodborne

Insight is a stat in Bloodborne that represents the depth of inhuman knowledge your character has acquired. This stat is crucial for certain game mechanics, such as summoning other players using the Beckoning Bell. Insight influences various aspects of the game, from character interactions to difficulty levels. The changes aren’t always immediate, requiring a reload of the area for the changes to take effect.

As the story progresses, Insight increases and can be used in network play or traded for items. The higher your Insight level, the more challenging the game becomes, as enemies gain new and more powerful attacks, and your vulnerability to Frenzy increases. Insight also functions as a currency in Bloodborne. Players can use Insight to trade for rare items from the Insight Bath Messengers in Hunter’s Dream.

If you're new to Souls Like series, it may be confusing to understand it at all. It's because the creator likes to make games where almost nothing, including the interface, is explained. Not everyone is into that, and if you want to make a game with unique mechanics, but need game UI design, we can help.

Shadow of the Colossus Sword Mechanics

In Shadow of the Colossus, the protagonist’s sword serves multiple critical functions, acting both as a weapon and a compass. This dual-purpose tool is important for progressing through the game and defeating the colossal foes that stand in the player’s way.

The sword in Shadow of the Colossus has magical properties that allow it to guide the player to the next Colossus. By holding up the sword in the light, the player can use its reflective beam to pinpoint the direction of the next Colossus.

Once a Colossus is located, the sword takes on another role: identifying the weak points of these massive creatures. To take down a Colossus, the player must find these weak points. By holding up the sword near a Colossus, the sword will reveal its location through a beam of light. When the sword is brought close to or reflects light on these spots, it will glow blue.

The identified weak points are the only places where the Colossus can be effectively harmed. The player must maneuver around the Colossus, often climbing onto it to reach these critical areas.

Psycho Mantis Boss Fight in Metal Gear Solid

In the original Metal Gear Solid, the boss Psycho Mantis is a telepath who can read Solid Snake’s thoughts. So he’s capable of predicting and evading the player’s moves. To defeat him, players need to switch the controller from port 1 to port 2, preventing Psycho Mantis from reading their inputs. This tactic applies to the PS1 and PS2 versions, while on PS3, players need to change the controller ports through the menu. For the PC version, switching to keyboard controls is necessary. This fourth wall breaker created one of the most memorable and challenging boss fights in gaming history.

The Voices in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

In Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, the protagonist Senua suffers from a form of psychosis, causing her to hear voices known as the Furies. These voices constantly whisper to her, providing both helpful and harmful commentary. In combat, they warn Senua of incoming attacks, especially those from behind that she might not see, thus guiding her when to dodge. The voices’ warnings can be crucial for survival if the player listens carefully.

The Furies also help with puzzles by making observations about the environment and offering hints on where to focus. The developers of Ninja Theory aimed for an accurate portrayal of psychosis by consulting with neuroscientists and people with lived experiences of the condition. The voices were recorded using binaural audio techniques to make them sound as though they were spatially whispering in the player’s ears, adding to the realism.

Dimension Swap

In Guacamelee!, players control Juan. He is a luchador who can switch between the worlds of the living and the dead. This unique ability changes the level layouts and enemy types. Some platforms and enemies only exist in one dimension, so players must switch between them to progress and solve puzzles.

Guacamelee! is set in a world inspired by Mexican culture and the Day of the Dead. The game’s story is lighthearted, with plenty of humor and references to other games. Players will enjoy vibrant graphics, catchy music, and satisfying combat.

One of the standout platformer mechanics of Guacamelee! is its focus on combos. Players need to maintain combo streaks to deal more damage and defeat enemies efficiently. The game includes five types of “energy punches” that match enemy shields.

Guacamelee standout platformer mechanic focus on combos

Around 2-3 hours into the game, Juan gains the ability to switch between the living and dead worlds. This mechanic is used to reveal hidden tiles and change the environment. For example, a platform that exists in the living world might disappear in the dead world. So the players switch dimensions to find levels. The environment is important for mechanics, and our video game environment design will make it unique.

The dimension-switching ability also affects combat. Enemies may exist in one world but not the other. Players need to switch to the correct dimension to attack them.

RPG Elements in a Match-3

Puzzle Quest cleverly combines the addictive match 3 game mechanics with elements of role-playing games (RPGs). In the game, players match gems to collect resources. Players use resources to attack enemies, cast spells, and level up their characters.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is a game that turns traditional match-3 play into an epic adventure. Released in 2007 by Infinite Interactive, it sets players in a high fantasy world. They need to move their characters across a map, engaging in battles and quests. Combat is done by matching colored gems on a board, similar to the popular game Bejeweled.

Puzzle Quest was well-received at its launch and praised for blending two different types of games so effectively. It has spawned a few sequels and variants, including Puzzle Quest 2 and Puzzle Quest: Galactrix. The game mechanics have even been adapted into licensed games like Marvel Puzzle Quest and Magic: The Gathering – Puzzle Quest.

Dinosaur Taming and Survival

In Ark: Survival Evolved you can tame and ride dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. Who doesn’t like dinosaurs? It is an action-packed survival game that drops players onto the mysterious island known as ARK. They must hunt, gather resources, craft items, and build shelters to survive. The game’s standout feature is its ability to tame dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals that roam the island.

It has survival game mechanics but players can capture dinosaurs using a sophisticated taming process. It involves subduing a dinosaur and nurturing it to health. Once tamed, animals can carry loads, gather resources, and participate in battles against wild creatures or other players.

Additionally, Ark: Survival Evolved includes a robust building system where players can construct everything from simple huts to massive fortresses. These structures protect the environment and hostile creatures, and players can customize them with a variety of materials and defenses.

Ark’s online multiplayer mode allows players to join forces or compete against each other. Forming tribes to share resources, territory, and power. The game also supports a host of mods and custom servers, offering endless possibilities for gameplay variations and community engagement.

Active Voiceover

Bastion is known for its innovative use of narration that actively responds to the player’s actions. This means the story changes based on how you play. The narrator comments on your choices and achievements in real-time. The narrator, voiced by Logan Cunningham, reacts not only to your significant choices but also to smaller, moment-to-moment actions in the game.

Bastion is an action isometric RPG developed by Supergiant Games, and released in 2011. In this game, you control “the Kid” as he walks through a beautifully drawn world. The universe literally pieces itself together around you. The game is set against a backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world called the Calamity which has shattered the environment. Bastion has a “hand-drawn” animation, which makes it look like a game for kids, but it’s really not. Animation plays a key role in a game mechanics perception, and our game animation studio can be helpful here.

Bastion was built over two years by a small team and has been widely acclaimed for its innovative storytelling, compelling gameplay, and stunning soundtrack. The game has been successful both critically and commercially, selling millions of copies worldwide and receiving numerous awards. It’s available on various platforms including Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo Switch, making it accessible to a wide audience.
